Day 2: Define Clear Success (WHAT)

3-2

The second most important thing a leader can do when assigning important work is to clearly define WHAT success looks like. A series of bullet points or simple sentences begin to paint a picture of observable ways everyone can see progress within the project. These can answer whether a task is complete, when it is needed, or other measures of achievement. Written purposefully, these also provide great latitude on how progress and success can be obtained. Often, we think a project description fills this need. Yet without a series of success descriptors, two people can see progress and success very differently. This is hard work, but essential, to unlocking the talent and commitment within your team. Making sure both of you are aligned and excited about these statements gives your project the best opportunity for success.
