# 26: Start an Alumni Group

Team Love 28 Days Social (9)-1

Not everyone who leaves your organization does so because of frustration. There are many factors beyond the walls of your office that determines that next right step in our careers. Perhaps there was a change in a family situation. Or perhaps a new opportunity emerged that was the perfect fit financially or in flexiblity.

Yet, when committed, dedicated team members eventually leave --- they also leave trusted friends and a powerful mission behind as well. And without a way to stay connected, they can move on, allowing these connections to slowly fade.

Some of the best team cultures we admire have active Alumni groups -- keeping personal and professional connections strong, including past team members in retirement ceremonies or farewell events. Even helping them retain their "insider status" when the organization is about to launch something new.

Healthy organizations know that people will come and go -- for their own reasons. Yet, our alumni can be powerful advocates, references and recruiters for the organization now and in the future. We just have to welcome that experience back.
